DJ Cam is the man who draws emotion from machines.
Cam is legendary in the France’s underground beat scene, as a mainstay of the French Touch, who started his career in the 1990’s alongside Daft Punk, Air, Motorbass, la Funk Mob.
His 1995 debut album, Underground Vibes, on his label Inflammable Record, Cam proved his expert jazz sampling, which earned Cam a great deal of respect while that album, can easily be considered a milestone in the electro hip-hop scene.
As a reel pioneer, Cam alongside such collaborators and friends as DJ Shadow and DJ Krush, created a whole new genre deemed Abstract Hip Hop. They built a sound focused on down tempo instrumental groves with an experimental approach reminiscent of the ‘60s and ‘70s recording techniques.
Over the years, DJ Cam helmed a number of side projects – remixes, collaborations, original soundtracks – and gave countless performances all around the world, and earned him the title as the first “Frenchie” to play Coachella in 1999!
Cam’s pioneering spirit means he is never content to stick with one style for very long and always experiments with new styles and sound. On his latest appropriately-named album, Seven, Cam put touches of well-crafted pop and folk, hints of old-school electronica, and cinematic, ambient tracks that invite the listener to a dream journey. For a feminine touch, DJ Cam added the vocals of Inlove, a new signing on his Inflammable label, and Nicolette, the long-time collaborator with Massive Attack, the legendary group that DJ Cam feels closer to now than ever before, and to whom he dedicates the album.
Now based in L.A., this September he’ll release his forthcoming album with his long time partner, the Berlin-based label !K7 (home of Herbert, Kruder & Dorfmeister), who issue the masterpiece abstract vibes collections, DJ-Kicks. You have probably heard his latest tunes that were among the most played on KCRW since the beginning of the year.
