Out of time…

Listen to the gypsy guitar intro on ‘Beautiful Tango’, then a voice that might have been recorded in the ‘50s, close you eyes, and travel…

Hindi Zahra is a Berber girl born into a family of musicians in Morocco, instantly plunged into the post-psychedelic Moroccan scene of the time. She grew up listening to the sound of Egyptian divas, raï, chaâbi, Berber music and desert rock ‘n’ roll, with the blues of the great Malian Ali Farka Touré and the sensual folk music of Ismaël Lo in the wings.

When she set out across the Mediterranean to join her father in Paris, she started to compose and play at varied gigs of the late Parisian nights. Hindi Zahra chisels away at her own original groove, a finely crafted soundtrack of soul-folk-jazz ballads and south Moroccan roots, on the cusp of black culture, embellished by some bendir or a gnaoua bass line, as well as lyrics in Berber.

Her debut album, Handmade, was released on the prestigious Blue Note jazz label and gained immediate success in France as it reached Gold status. She won this year’s Victoires de la Musique award for Best World Music Album, an equivalent of a Grammy, and joins prestigious artists such as Salif Keita and Amadou & Mariam in that category.

‘Beautiful Tango’ received serious kudos from The Wire, while the UK’s adventurous music press heralded her as a worthy successor to Billie Holiday.
