Hugh Coltman can easily be considered the most French of the Englishmen!
This former member of the British band The Hoax was spotted by the legendary producer Mike Vernon, and eventually led Coltman to a new music career in France. After many shows, from the metro to the most notorious stages in town, Coltman became a major character in the Parisian music scene.
His debut album, Stories From The Safe House, recorded in 2008, is a subtle mix of folk songs, soul grooves and bossa nova colors.
If Stevie Wonder and Leonard Cohen are two of Coltman’s major influences, we can easily feel some parallels with Shuggie Otis, Brazilian tropicalists Tom Zé and Caetano Veloso or Joan Armatrading.
His remarkable voice is featured on Nouvelle Vague’s latest album, a cover of “Amoureux Solitaires” (originally sung by iconic French pop idol Lio), and OohlaL.A. will be a reunion for all. Coltman has already charmed L.A.’s music lovers in February, when he opened for Vanessa Paradis at the Orpheum Theater downtown.
Coltman now returns with new tracks from his latest album, set for release late this year. His magical story continues as he makes a stop at the El Rey Theater.
